5 dry shampoos for sweaty lifestyles
posted: March 26, 2014
I recently went seven days without washing my hair, a personal record. This may not seem like a long time to some and to others it may feel like an eternity. (I usually wash my hair every third day, to give you context.) So how did I pull off what I consider a remarkable hair feat and still leave the house each day with my head held high? Two words: dry shampoo.
Dry shampoos help keep your hair looking and feeling clean between washes—yes, even when you are sweating every single day. During my week-long shampoo fast, not only did I hit up yoga classes (Power and Hatha), I also fit in some serious gym workouts and still went about my regular work week without wearing a hat.
Of the five dry shampoos I tried, here is how I found they stacked against each other on a scale of 1-10.
10 = the best in the business!
5 = not bad, but room for improvement
1 = I might as well just wash my hair
1. Bumble and Bumble Pret-a-Powder
Days without washing hair: 2
Packaging – 4
Formula – 6
Scent – 7
Overall – 4
This dry shampoo claims to be equal parts dry shampoo and style extender as well as to add some volume (ie. not your traditional dry shampoo). But I couldn’t get around how cumbersome the packaging is, which made application too long to bear. The small spout and tiny hole the product comes out of meant that I had to cover smaller sections of hair and make sure the product was worked through. That said, its scent was fresh and light, which was its main plus.
2. Principessa Notte Breeze Hair Powder
Days without Washing Hair – 4
Packaging – 6
Formula – 6
Scent – 8
Overall – 6
This stuff smells divine, like chocolate cake! What I like about this formula is that it comes in two shades, one for darker hair and one for lighter, which makes it easier to blend with your roots. The product definitely allowed me to go longer than usual without washing my hair.
3. Arrowroot Powder
Days without Washing Hair – 3
Packaging – 0 (depending on how you store this!)
Formula – 7
Scent – 0 (add a scent or leave it fragrance-free)
Overall – 7
A friend recommended this, so naturally (see what I did there?) I gave it a go, despite that I was skeptical that a simple ingredient could do the trick. The great thing about this option is you can choose your own application device by putting the powder in whatever works for you, like another empty bottle or container. You can also add a couple drops of essential oil—not too much, otherwise you’ll end up an oil-slick—or cocoa powder for smell and colour.
4. Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray
Days without Washing Hair – 5
Overall – 7.5
I tried both spray and powder dry shampoos, and while my top picks are mainly powders, this spray stood out in a couple ways: The formula didn’t leave any residue plus it added thickness to my hair, making it very easy to style.
5. Lush No Drought
Days without Washing Hair – 7
Packaging – 7
Formula – 8
Scent – 9
Overall – 9
I can’t say enough about how magical this dry shampoo is. Not only did I go a whole week without washing my hair, but I was able to use this product the fewest number of times throughout the non-wash period. (I had to re-apply some formulas more often than others to maintain clean-looking hair.) Its citrus-y scent was enjoyable but not over-powering, and though the product itself is completely white, it disappeared into my dark hair and scalp after a quick brush.
