5 sweat-resistant mascaras
posted: May 12, 2014
I usually have a no-makeup policy for my workouts, but lately I’ve found myself running from sweat sessions to dinner dates with friends. And while I appreciate the smokey-eye look, raccoon eyes really aren’t my jam.
So I went on a mission to track down the best smudge-proof mascaras for my varied workouts. I started off with my favourites, then expanded my search to recommendations from friends and co-workers, finally test driving recommendations from the beauty community. Here are best of the bunch for your sweaty activity.
10 = you could finish a triathlon and Twiggy’s famous falsies would still have nothing on your lashes
5 = okay, there’s some smudging happening
1 = (just insert the noise that a raccoon makes here)
1. Cycling + Eyeko Black Magic Mascara
Eyeko’s formulas are water-resistant and the Fat Brush formula offers fiber-enhanced keratin solution for your lashes. Kertain is great at conditioning your lashes and helping the mascara to glide on smoothly. This mascara added lots of volume and definition. Of all the mascaras I tried, this was the darkest of the dark and withstood my cycling adventures.
Tip: Bottom lashes are often forgotten and you can either coat them in mascara or take some clear mascara; this provides a more natural look yet still defines them.
2. Swimming + Dior Blackout Waterproof
Mascara and lots of water aren’t the best combination, but Dior Blackout was up for the challenge. While my lashes weren’t the fullest after the swim, I wasn’t raccoon-eyed either, and that’s a big win in my books.
Tip: Zig zag the brush from the root to tip of your lashes for clump-free application.
3. Running + Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes! *Waterproof
I wouldn’t usually be too concerned with running and mascara since the cooler weather holds my mascara in place pretty well, but summer is around the corner and that means running + sunshine = sweaty runs. Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Splashes! *Waterproof was a dream on my runs. This formula added a lot of volume to my lashes and held it throughout and after my run.
Tip: Don’t pump the wand in and out of the tube. This pushes air in, making the mascara dry up faster. Try twisting the wand back and forth in circular motions to get the right amount of product.
4. Circuit + Buxom Lash Waterproof
Not only did this formula stand up to an intense circuit class, but – bonus – it glided onto my lashes without any clumping. I applied two coats before class and the curvy brush applied the perfect amount of mascara to my lashes. The formula added length and definition to my lashes.
Tip: For definition, take the tip of the wand and run it along each lash to separate and define them.
5. Yoga + Blinc Mascara
Blinc is known for its water-resistant, tube-technology formula. This means that unlike conventional mascaras, it coats your lashes with tiny ‘tubes,’ which makes the stuff stay putt all day. From the most relaxing Hatha to the sweatiest power yoga class, this one held up without moving an inch.
Tip: The best method to get this mascara off at the end of the day is lots of warm water and gentle pressure to help slide the mascara off.
Note: Waterproof formulas are amazing at staying put but can be a pain to take off. Not if you use coconut oil! Rub a bit right on top of your makeup and gently glide it over your lashes. You’ll start to see the oil break up your makeup; keep massaging for another minute, then take a damp washcloth and wipe away the oil and makeup residue. Done!
