think dirty in order to shop clean
posted: March 7, 2014
Few of us really know what we are smearing on our faces, hands and bodies when we pick up creams and lotions these days. (Unless it’s coconut oil, then okay, you know.)
But seriously, ever tried to pronounce those long, dinosaur-sounding words in most products’ ingredient list?
Cue Think Dirty, an app* created by some innovative folks in Toronto, and used for deciphering what the heck is actually in our beauty products so we can make educated choices about them.
The app rates products on a scale of one through 10, with 10 denoting ingredients with potentially negative long-term health effects. No idea what a particular ingredient is or does? Scan the barcode; this pulls up a score on the Dirty Meter, which offers insight on what the authorities recognize and what they, frankly, ban.
Lucky for the busier amongst us, the app also suggests cleaner options if you’re looking for alternatives and don’t have the time to go shopping—or you don’t have the inclination to throw down the cash on an unknown brand. We’re talking about insight into more than 14,000 products you can find in North America.
And if you’re the one random person on the continent who finds an awesome product that isn’t on the app, just tell them; they’ll add it.
I put the app to the test on three shampoos.

This shampoo is a luxurious, and tops my list for the best all-around, 100 per cent natural treatment. Even if you’ve fried your hair colouring it, this works. Think: silky smooth.

If you battle the dry-one-day/oily-the-next battle then this is the answer. It provides a deep cleanse for your hair and scalp without stripping either of their natural oils.
