just add (raw) coconut water

Coconut water sales are booming, and nutritionists and dieticians agree that its natural electrolyte and nutritional benefits are undeniable. The truth, though, is not all coconut water is created equal. So as it becomes more and more popular, showing up everywhere from gas stations to Starbucks, how do you get the most from your coconut water?
choose raw and unpasteurized
Standard coconut water undergoes pasteurization, and is usually exposed to high heat to prevent foodborne illness. While this treatment promotes food safety and shelf life, it jeopardizes the full nutrient density we’re after.
To guarantee you’re getting the nutritional benefits that coconut water promises, buy it raw. This means taking it straight from a coconut, or most natural grocery stores in North America sell versions that have undergone a heatless high-pressure process or live in the frozen section.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the jury is still out as to whether organic foods are more nutritious, but what’s not under debate is that pesticide and preservative-filled foods add to our toxicity levels. (Plus, I personally think organic foods just taste better.)
Coconut water contains five essential electrolytes and 15 times more potassium than average sports drinks, making it perfect for preventing dehydration (especially in hot classes). It’s almost identical to blood plasma, acting as a carrier to deliver nutrients directly into cells. It’s a significant source of vitamin C, magnesium and manganese, helping to boost your immune system and keep your skin healthy. It’s cholesterol and fat free (bonus!). In some countries, it’s even used as a base for intravenous medicine. Now that’s pure hydration.
take it to the next level in a smoothie
1.5 cups raw, organic coconut water
30 drops liquid chlorophyll
1 tsp spirulina
If your coconut water is frozen, put it in the fridge the night before you want to make this. When it’s thawed and ready, mix and enjoy!
