ruby’s tuesday | one celebrity, two friends and nine treasures yoga

On a recent 48-hour business trip to LA, my friend Emma asked if there was time in my schedule to join her for her Friday morning Kundalini yoga class. The instructor, Tej, is a bit of a local legend, Emma informed me.
Here’s the quick back story: one of Yogi Bhajan’s original students, Tej founded Nine Treasures Yoga after splitting from the more established Golden Bridge Yoga earlier this year, taking her famous clients (notably Demi and Russell Brand) with her. Would either be in class today, I wondered?
Thanks to LA’s infamous traffic, we arrived a full 20 minutes after class was scheduled to start, but Emma seemed to think this wouldn’t be a problem. And what do you know, despite being further waylaid with issues finding parking, when we crept in and laid down our mats at the very back of the studio, class had only just gotten started. Apparently Tej likes to start with a lengthy preamble and will usually wait if she knows people are running late.
About 60 or 70 yogis filled the room, and like all the best Kundalini instructors Tej passed on nuggets of yogi wisdom as she led us through a fairly simple 90-minute kriya. As usual with Kundalini yoga, I found myself deeply moved by the class, and confess that there were tears in my eyes when, to finish, Tej had us all in singing happy birthday to one of her students. Let’s just say that the wider significance of a person’s birthday—the day that your soul is embodied on Earth—was very apparent to me by this point!
And what do you know, Demi had been there all along, though it was only as the students filed out that I spotted her. Dressed all in black (as opposed to the customary Kundalini whites) and with huge shades obscuring half her face, she was at the hub of one of the small groups of people sticking around for a post-class chitchat.
And so there you have it: a spiritually uplifting Kundalini class in Hollywood complete with celebrity sighting. It was well worth braving the LA traffic for.
