welcome to the anti-stink zone: meet aaron de jong

Sweat happens, sometimes at the least appropriate times, like when you accidentally wear a sweaty shirt on a first date and end up washing your armpits in the sink in attempt to disguise the smell, says our West 4th Ambassador, Aaron de Jong.
We developed Silverescent(™) technology for one reason: we don’t want the tops that we really sweat in to smell anymore. Made with X-STATIC®, a yarn with pure 99.9 percent silver, permanently bonded on a nylon yarn which prevents the growth of odour-causing bacteria from embedding itself into our gear. The anti-stink is there with you as long as that garment is with you.
As owner of new Vancouver studio, Movement 108, Aaron is no stranger to sweat, and associates it with exercise. “Whenever I’m doing so, I’m doing it on purpose and I expect to get sweaty.” His intimate studio space focuses on providing intentional body movements through workouts using bodyweight, TRX, kettlebells and functional movement.
We got up close and personal with Aaron during his workout and chatted about how he likes to get sweaty, pheromones and getting motivated, check out the video.
What are your favourite ways to sweat outside the studio?
My favourite ways to sweat are a total variety. One thing I do know is that I like getting really sweaty when I exercise and the way I do that is playing a lot of soccer. I support it with strength training and doing other cardiovascular exercise to make sure that I’m strong on the field. I spin at Cadence next door, I go for hikes, and I like swimming at Kits pool.
How do you get motivated for a workout?
Oh my goodness, I have so many different excuses not to exercise. When I want to exercise on my own I’m always able to push it later and later into the day, and then to the next day. My biggest thing is accountability with friends. Part of the reason why I love this space is that I partake in some of the other instructor’s classes, and when I tell someone I’m going to be there, there is an expectation to show up. I always feel way better after so if at the end of the day I need to motivate myself its knowing I’m going to feel way better and stronger afterwards.
What’s the worst thing about being sweaty?
When you don’t want to be sweaty, and you are. It depends on your lifestyle¬–if you’re intentionally being sweaty then that’s great, but if you’re ever in a circumstance where you really don’t want to be sweaty and you are, there’s nothing fun about that.
If you’re out on a date and you start sweating you don’t want to seem too nervous, so there’s times when it’s not the appropriate response, but it just happens.
What gets you up in the morning?
What gets me out of bed is something I’ve been searching for, for a long time. It’s helping and enabling people to be better, stronger versions of themselves. The reason I opened my own studio is because I wanted to affect as many people as positively as possible. I’m not a morning person, but when I wake up every morning at 5, I know that when I come to the studio and people are getting something out of the space and the services that I provide, its easy to roll out of bed.
I’ve had that job where I didn’t love what I was doing, and it’s really challenging to jump into the shower. I don’t have that right now because I love being a fitness instructor, I love being a wellness coach, and being active. I love it so much and I want to share that with other people.
Would you say you’re a stinky sweater?
I find that my sweat smell level totally varies on the activity, and it depends on what I’m eating too. If I have too many beers on Saturday night and I go do the grind on Sunday morning, I smell disgusting. And that makes sense because I’m pumping out toxins.
What’s the best part about being an ambassador?
Everyone has been so supportive towards me as an individual, and in a business sense. I have a lot of friends at the store and within the lululemon community–my life is so tied in with it and it’s so nice to feel so supported by such a big organization but still on a personal level.
